SnapTax April 2026 Update — What's New for Freelancers This Month
Tax planning for freelancers and 1099 independent contractors doesn't have to be a source of constant stress. At SnapTax, we believe in clarity over complexity, which is why we are constantly updating our platform based on your feedback.
From the founder: Building SnapTax in public
Every feature in this latest release came from a real user request. I read every reply and feedback email personally, because I want to build a tool that actually solves the problems you face as a freelancer or independent contractor. This is what building in public looks like. Sometimes it means an overnight launch to get a requested tool into your hands faster, but it always means we are listening.
This month, we are launching nine new features. Two of them are big enough to change who SnapTax is built for. Whether you are a side hustler with a day job or a parent managing a household, these updates were designed to give you clarity over your taxes without the complexity of accounting software.
The big updates: Mixed income support and child tax credits
The biggest request we have had is for better support for mixed income households. Many of you are side hustlers who have a W2 day job while building a 1099 business on the side. Previously, you had to choose one income type or try to force your situation into a box that didn't quite fit.
Now, we have added W2 + 1099 combined income support. You can now handle your full financial picture in one tax estimate. Whether you have a W2 and a 1099, two W2s and a 1099, or two 1099s and a W2, our platform handles the math. This matters because 1099 income layers on top of your W2 income, which often changes your tax bracket. Getting this wrong can cost you real money in underpayment penalties. You can check your specific situation with a free trial of SnapTax to see how these income streams interact. For more details on the differences, see our guide on 1099 vs W2 taxes.

We have also added child tax credit calculations. If you are a freelance parent, your household situation should be reflected accurately in every estimate. Before this update, estimates were calculating as if dependents didn't exist. Now, your credits are automatically factored into your tax plan, giving you a more precise look at what you actually owe.

New features for every SnapTax user
Beyond the major audience expansions, we have added five features that every subscriber can use right now.
First, we added safe harbor payment amounts to the Tax Center. You can now see your safe harbor numbers alongside your actual estimated liability. Safe harbor is a strategy that protects you from IRS underpayment penalties as long as you pay at least 90 percent of your current year tax or 100 percent of your prior year tax. It removes the guesswork from your quarterly payment strategy by showing you the minimum you need to pay to stay safe.
We also introduced year-over-year tax profile history. Previous years now lock automatically, so your 2025 data stays exactly as it was while you work on 2026. This creates a clean, audit-ready history with no risk of accidental overwrites. To help you transition between years, we built the year-end close-out wizard. It is a step-by-step walkthrough that prompts you to reconcile payments and lock the year before moving forward. No more guessing what to do in January.
To make the app easier to navigate, we added smarter notifications and help bubbles. You will get proactive nudges when something important, like setting your projection method, when that hasn't been completed. Help bubbles are now available throughout the app, so answers to common questions are always one click away. And we continue to make our AI chatbot smarter and smarter on tax rules.
Power features for Builder plan subscribers
For those of you doing serious volume and uploading bank statements, we have three new tools to save you hours of work.
First, we brought our popular "Is this deductible?" wizard inside the app for Builder users. You can describe any expense in plain English and walk through the wizard to get an instant answer on whether it is deductible. It saves you from constant Googling or waiting on support for simple questions.

The second is bulk transaction categorization. You can now select dozens of transactions at once and update their category, business or personal, business use percentage, or save or delete them in a single action. If you have ever clicked through transactions one by one, you know how much of a relief this is. What used to take half an hour now takes seconds.

We also launched the receipt audit risk report. This new tab in your reporting dashboard shows your receipt attach rate by expense category. It flags your biggest audit risks by highlighting large deductions that are missing documentation. The IRS does not ask nicely when they want to see receipts. Knowing where your gaps are before they do is a huge advantage. As a bookkeeper, this is exactly the kind of report I would build for a client manually, but now it is automatic for every Builder plan subscriber.

What is coming next for SnapTax
We are building fast based on your feedback. Now that we have a strong foundation for our Starter and Builder plans, we are turning our focus to Optimizer features.
I am currently working with a user on a capital gains tracker for investors and day traders and I am really excited about how it's coming along. We are also designing a deductions optimizer which will include advanced techniques like a home office deduction wizard, itemized deductions, and a retirement savings tracker. This will be a great tool for anyone sitting right on the line between the standard deduction and itemizing. You can read more about our long-term vision in our freelancer tax planning guide.
We are also designing a penalty calculator so that if you do get behind, you know exactly what it will cost you. Our goal is to make SnapTax your one stop shop for everything related to tax planning.
